Where Curiosity Drives Discovery
In our Reggio-inspired Lower School, children from PreK through Grade 4 learn through play, inquiry, and collaboration — building a foundation of wonder that lasts a lifetime.
A Reggio-Inspired Lower School
We honor the questions of our students. Drawing from the Reggio Emilia approach, our Lower School teaches children to be researchers — developing intellectual curiosity through play, collaboration, and hands-on exploration.
Working in partners and small groups, children use art, drama, and experimentation to explore ideas across the curriculum. They build connections between disciplines and develop the confidence to share their thinking with others.
Our PhilosophyBuilding a Love of Learning
Our curriculum sparks wonder and develops foundational skills across core disciplines — always through the lens of inquiry, creativity, and collaboration.
Literacy
The journey begins with a love of story. Students compose, read, and share their own stories, building word-solving strategies and developing stamina through a choice-driven writer’s workshop.
Mathematics
Beyond numbers and operations — geometry, algebraic thinking, measurement, and data. Math-rich environments develop innate competencies to sort, classify, describe, and find patterns.
Science & Exploration
Inquiry-based learning where students develop questions, test theories, and construct knowledge. Engineering design, coding, and robotics are introduced through creative, screen-free technology.
What drew us to The Hudson School was how deeply the teachers listen to children. Our daughter doesn’t just memorize facts — she asks questions, tests ideas, and comes home excited to share what she discovered. The Reggio approach is alive in every classroom.
Learning Through the Arts
A strong emphasis on learning through the arts defines our Lower School. The “Shared Space” — our dedicated maker space — provides a variety of materials and artistic techniques for hands-on exploration.
Daily music based on the Kodály philosophy develops musical literacy from the earliest ages. Visual and dramatic arts weave cognitive skills with imagination in large ongoing projects and independent activities — giving every child multiple languages for expression and understanding.
