About

Our History

Founded in 1978 by Suellen Newman, The Hudson School has grown from a bold idea into one of Hoboken’s most cherished institutions — a community where every student is known, challenged, and inspired.

The Beginning

A Vision for Something Different

In 1978, educator Suellen Newman founded The Hudson School with a simple but powerful belief: that children learn best in a community where they are truly known. Starting with just a handful of students in Hoboken, she created a school built on intellectual curiosity, compassion, and the courage to think independently. What began as a small alternative has grown into a thriving PreK–12 institution that has educated generations of students.
